Courthouse Hotel, London, UK
What’s so great about this pool?
Just a few metres from Oxford Circus, in one of the liveliest parts of London, this is a sort of secret treasure. It’s quiet, it’s relaxing, it’s big enough for a reasonable swim and you’d never think it was a two minute walk to the exciting shopping areas of Bond Street and Carnaby Street. It’s in the basement of a fascinating building, and it’s an ideal place to chill out – especially if you’re just about to do a bit of shopping or planning to to to the theatre.
- The pool is a generous 8 metres square – it fills an entire room of the basement
- It is 1.4 metres deep – which makes it great for a spot of light exercise
- Next to the pool there is a glass cabana where you can lay out in comfort
- The spa has a small but well-equipped gym and a sauna
- Opening hours are from 10.00am to 7.00pm, which makes it ideal for quick dip before dinner

The pool’s fab – so what about the rest of the hotel?
The Courthouse is a 5 star boutique hotel – in the centre of London’s West End. Until 1998 the building was the Great Marlborough Street Magistrates Court and was where many dodgy characters including John Lennon, Johnny Rotten, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were brought to face British justice.
There are still lots of original features. The bar still has the old cell doors, the old courtroom is now an Asian restaurant and some of the upstairs rooms still have the original fireplaces from the magistrates’ rooms.
There are two restaurants – one is called Silk and serves pan-Asian (primarily Thai and Indian) food. The Carnaby Brasserie sells steaks, burgers and light meals and there are two bars – one on the roof.
If you like extreme luxury, this is a good place to come. There are 116 rooms and suites – including a penthouse suite with two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and a kitchenette.
