The Bedford Lodge lowdown
Bedford Lodge is one of those four-star hotels which makes you wonder why you would bother with a five-star hotel – it’s an absolute haven and a wonderful place to grab a little pampering and some very good food. The spa is outstanding. There’s a hydrotherapy pool, a rooftop hot tub, a thermal area with an impressive array of experiential showers, a couples treatment room, an indulgent spa lounge and relaxation are. The bedrooms are of a very high quality, the breakfasts are wonderful and dinner at Squire’s restaurant is an absolute treat, with hearty and incredilbly tasty dishes, many made with local produce.
What else is there to do in Newmarket except swim?
Well, there’s the racing of course! Take a walk out of the hotel and you will see jockeys training their race horses at the training ground called The Gallops which is literally next door to Bedford Lodge. It’s fascinating to watch them. Or book yourself in for a day at the races themselves. Newmarket is near some wonderful historic towns including medieval Lavenham, Ely (with its Norman cathedral) and Bury St Edmunds (with its market, galleries and museum). You can also, of course, visit Cambridge which is a half-hour drive away. And as far activities go, think cycling (Suffolk is fantastically flat), horse riding, falconry, fly fishing and more.
